Speakers & Workshop Leaders

Prof. Dr. Christian Erik Pohl

Keynote speaker, ETH Zürich

Head of the Institute for Environmental Decisions / Head of TdLab Research area During his studies of environmental sciences, his PhD on uncertainty in LCA, and his postdoctoral research in science studies, he observed that interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research was reinvented each time a new project began. There was no systematic learning and no established body of knowledge on how to conceptualise and practise such collaborative research. Since the late 1990s, and together with colleagues from around the world, he has been endeavouring to build such a body of knowledge, for example through the Principles for Designing Transdisciplinary Research, the Handbook of Transdisciplinary Research, td‑net’s toolbox for co‑producing knowledge, and on which common ground to build? Interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research are means to an end. Within the context of his department, that end is sustainable development. Sustainable development demands addressing complex and societally contested issues. He is committed to interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research because he regards both as the essential means to achieve this objective. Further academic positions • Member of the steering committee of NRP 82 Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, Swiss National Science Foundation • Member of scientific advisory board of transdisciplinarity-net (td-net), Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences • Founding editor of td-net’s toolbox for co-producing knowledge • Founding member of the editorial board for the Team Science Toolkit of the US National Cancer Institute • Editor of Sustainability Science
